HONOLULU (June 30, 2022) – The East-West Center launched the Asia Matters for America Public & Elite Opinion Poll Report and the fourth edition of the Asia Matters for America/America Matters for Asia publication on June 30 in Honolulu, Hawai’i at the East-West Center International Media Conference.

The publications were launched simultaneously on the last day of the conference, which was focused on restoring trust and building US-Indo-Pacific connections in diplomacy and international relations. Dr. Satu Limaye, Vice President of the East-West Center and Director of the East-West Center in Washington presented the findings, followed by a plenary discussion with senior regional journalists on America’s importance in the Indo-Pacific. Panelists included:

The Asia Matters for America Public & Elite Opinion Poll Report highlights findings from a recent survey commissioned by the East-West Center and conducted by National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago. The initiative is an illuminating analysis comparing US public and elite opinion at the state and local levels regarding America’s interactions with the Indo-Pacific region. Questions addressed in this survey include issues pertaining to economy, security, politics, people-to-people connections as well as to what extent Americans believe Asia matters to the United States.

This project is part of the East-West Center’s flagship Asia Matters for America initiative, which maps the trade, investment, employment, business, diplomacy, security, education, tourism, and people-to-people connections between the United States and the Indo-Pacific at the national, state, and local levels. Alongside the public opinion poll, the East-West Center also launched the fourth edition of the Asia Matters for America/Asia Matters for America publication, which uses data visualizations to map these connections.
