Taiwan Matters for America will be released on the Asia Matters for America website. Please join the EWCW mailing list to receive updates on the Taiwan Matters publication and a diverse array of other projects and programs.

A Thought Piece for Taiwan Matters for America

David R. Stilwell, retired Air Force brigadier general and former assistant secretary of state for Asia and the Pacific, explains that as "Beijing’s endless promises to 'continue to reform and open China’s economy' ring increasingly hollow, the attractiveness of Taiwan as a tech leader, trade partner, and model for Rule of Law governance only increases."

Taiwan-US Cooperation in Public Health and Pandemic Containment

Prof. Chien-Jen Chen, Epidemiologist, Distinguished Professor at Academia Sinica, and former Vice President of the Republic of China, explains that the "Taiwan-US collaboration in public health and pandemic containment is a loyal partnership that has lasted for forty years."

Resilient Industry Ecochains for the US-Taiwan Partnership

Stephen Su, Senior Vice President and General Director of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) of Taiwan, explains that the "United States and Taiwan can work closely together to develop resilient industry ecochains for key industries such as semiconductors, telecommunications, automotive, biotech, machinery, etc."

Taiwan’s Big and Clean Bets: Towards Green Cooperation

Wen-Yu Weng, Clean Energy and Climate Response Expert at PA Consulting, explains that "the future of Taiwan’s energy transition lies in making big bets in highly creative and highly technical approaches" and green energy "policy needs to embrace the fundamentally decentralized and democratized nature of solution-generation, agenda-setting, and experimental models."

Expanding the Depth and Breadth of the US-Taiwan Technological Partnership via the Semiconductor Ecosystem

Andrew Wylegala, President of AmCham Taiwan and former US Senior Foreign Service Officer, explains that "increasing domestic chip production capacity should be accompanied by the recognition that the semiconductor industry functions most efficiently as a globalized industry."

Taiwan and America: Partners in the Battle for the Cognitive Domain

Prof. Kerry K. Gershaneck, author of the book “Media Warfare: Taiwan’s Battle for the Cognitive Domain” and a visiting scholar at National Chengchi University in Taiwan, explains that "[m]edia warfare presents an existential threat to Taiwan. By employing media warfare to divide and demoralize the people of Taiwan, the CCP hopes to achieve its goal of annexing Taiwan without having to resort to open kinetic conflict."

US Policy Toward Taiwan Should Emphasize Substance, Not Fanfare

Denny Roy, Senior Fellow at the East-West Center, explains that "[f]or US policymakers, a strategy of confronting Beijing with its worst fear, the “splitting” of “China,” in the hope this will cause China to permanently rule out the use of force against Taiwan, is problematic."

US-Taiwan Relations and the National Security vs. Human Rights Fallacy

The Honorable Randall G. Schriver, Chairman of the Board at the Project 2049 Institute and former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Affairs, & Jennifer K. Hong Whetsell, Senior Director at the Project 2049 Institute, explain that "Taiwan, a leading democracy and one of the freest countries in the world, continues to combat coercive and annihilative threats from the People’s Republic of China (PRC), while not wavering on human rights."

Scholarly Ties, Cooperative Research, Academic Dialogue, and International Student Exchanges in US-Taiwan Relations
