Visit the EWC Gallery from now until January 8, 2023 to see our newest exhibit: Hana Keaka: The Art of Hawaiian Theatre at UH Mānoa.

Displayed in this exhibition are the origins, development, and practices of hana keaka. In addition to a historical account of the practice of hana keaka by Kānaka Maoli, the exhibition highlights the contemporary hana keaka productions of the Hawaiian Theatre Program in the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

This exhibition shares a historical account of the practice of hana keaka by Kānaka Maoli and traditional theatre events that paved the way for the establishment of the theatre program including the works of Ka Hālau Hanakeaka and the four kūkulu (pillars) of traditional performance—stories, genealogy, visual & performing arts, and Hawaiian language—that are the foundation for contemporary hana keaka. The exhibition centers on five original productions that have been developed and staged since 2015 and convey stories that range from the traditional and historical to the contemporary. Featured objects include costumes, instruments, hula ki‘i (puppets), set design models, props, and production photographs.

In conjunction with this exhibition, new works-in-progress will be presented by current UHM Hawaiian Theatre haumāna (students) on October 16, November 18–20, & December 18.

Monthly exhibition tours will be offered in ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i (Hawaiian language) at 3:00 pm following events on Sundays: October 16, November 13, December 18, & January 8.
