Picture of the Mekong River

OFFICE/DEPARTMENT

On day one of the workshop, there were a series of short presentations followed by team breakout groups. A key objective of the project is to expand and deepen existing research networks to explore climate, environmental, social and infrastructure threats to deltas. Teams presented issues on the diverse vulnerabilities from across delta regions of Southeast Asia, identifying thematic and geographic similarities and differences between the sub-teams.

Dr. Ryan Longman from the East-West Center presents to the group information about climate change modeling and projected changes in the unique deltas.

Dr. Kevin Woods from the East-West Center leads a discussion on migration from Myanmar.

Dr. Micah Fisher (East-West Center) facilitates a discussion on the impact of climate change, natural resources, and urban development in the Mahakam Delta in East Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Dr. Ming Li Yong (East-West Center) leads a discussion with researchers from Cambodia and Vietnam on transboundary water management and livelihood challenges in the Mekong Delta.

Dr. Phanwin Yokying (East-West Center) plans the implementation of a research initiative on climate shocks and time allocation among rice farmers in the Chao Phraya River Delta in Thailand.

In the afternoon, participants attended a book launch panel discussion to learn about the newly published book “Turning Land into Capital: Development and Dispossession in the Mekong Region.”

Workshop participants Dr. Kevin Woods (East-West Center), editor and author, and Dr. Carl Middleton (Chulalongkorn University), an author, summarize their book contributions on the book launch panel to share their insights.
