Two Years After the Coup: Media in Myanmar Two Years After the Coup: Media in Myanmar

Thursday, March 16 | 4:30-6pm Hawaiʻi / 10:30pm-12am Washington DC
Friday, March 17 | 9-10:30am Yangon

Since the military-led coup in Myanmar on February 1, 2021, the country has nose-dived into political and economic turmoil yet again. In addition to daily attacks against its own people, the junta has systematically increased surveillance of its citizens and clamped down on freedom of movement and speech, effectively curtailing the past decade’s democratic reforms and the promising media landscape. Myanmar journalists are no strangers to the extreme dangers of reporting on their country, the second biggest jailer of journalists in the world after China. But conditions following the coup certainly present new challenges and risks to doing their job – now more important than ever.

Building upon its previous webinars After the Coup and One Year After the Coup, EWC Seminars Live returns to this important issue following the second anniversary of the military takeover. A panel of respected Myanmar journalists from diverse backgrounds will discuss how they and their media organizations have innovatively adapted to reporting since the coup, and how their practices differ from earlier periods of military rule. From Rakhine State to Kachin State, and from international to national to ethnic media organizations, panelists will speak on the different challenges they must overcome based on their respective readerships and the regions from which they report. We will conclude with the crucial role Myanmar media have played since the coup and the types of domestic and international support most needed to continue their role in their country's battle for democracy.
