Professional Exchange & Research Program

The East-West Center in Washington (EWCW), in partnership with the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade (KIET) and the Korea International Trade Association (KITA), is launching a professional exchange and research program. The program is focused on showcasing the local impact of US-Korea economic ties in communities outside either nations' capital. To this end, the program will bring together Korean and American professionals from economic development agencies, trade associations, and other organizations involved in US-South Korea commercial affairs to exchange ideas and engage in collaborative research.

The program is currently accepting applications on a rolling basis. Professionals, including public sector specialists, private sector experts, and academicians, currently involved in or with a record of involvement in US-Korea commercial affairs or economic development projects are welcomed to apply. The program will consider participants from a wide range of backgrounds, including individuals involved in the following activities:

  • Site development of industrial, tech, or business parks
  • Site selection or market entry
  • Economic development activities at the state, county, or municipal level
  • Export promotion

  • Producing research or analysis on local commercial affairs or economic development

Program Details

The exchange program will run from April 2023 - July 2023 and include two participants from Korea and two from the United States. During this time, participants will attend four workshops: an inaugural virtual workshop in April, a May in-person workshop in Korea, a June in-person workshop in the United States, and a concluding virtual workshop in July. At these workshops, participants will discuss their research, issues of common concern, and share best practices. Flights and per diem will be offered for international travel. Participants will receive a stipend of US$1,500 each month of the four-month exchange program.

As part of the research component of the project, each participant will be asked to produce a five-page brief on US-Korea commercial links as they relate to the participant's local community and area of expertise.
