Sep 08, 2018 - Sep 21, 2018
Part of: China-United States Journalists Exchange

Program

Theme: Business and Trade: Opportunities and Challenges
Dates: September 8-21, 2018
Destinations (US journalists): Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong
Destinations (Chinese journalists): Washington DC
Final Dialogue (all journalists): Washington DC

The 9th China-United States Journalists Exchange focused on the theme of Business and Trade: Opportunities and Challenges. The program provided opportunities for journalists to explore the current issues related to the important bilateral relationship between the world’s two largest economies under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump and President Xi Jinping.

With China ranked as America’s largest goods trading partner and America being the top destination for Chinese exports, the immense volume of trade between the two countries generates continued conflicts. Meetings focused on business and trade relating to trade friction, and trade and investment policies between the two countries. The journalists also gained a firsthand look at a wide range of topics concerning US-China relations; economic growth and challenges in each country; stability and security in the Asia-Pacific region; and current social, cultural and political issues in China and the United States.

The 2018 Exchange took six Chinese participants to the United States and six US participants to China and Hong Kong to meet with government officials, business leaders, academics, journalists, non-governmental organizations, and other members of the Chinese and American communities. Following these group study tours, both groups of journalists met at the East-West Center in Washington for a one-day dialogue to share their travel experiences and exchange opinions on how media coverage of US-China issues can be improved in the participants’ respective countries.

The China-United States Journalists Exchange is a joint program of the East-West Center, the All-China Journalists Association, and the Better Hong Kong Foundation.
