Research in this study area focuses on how rapid socio-economic development is affecting political institutions and processes and how political systems and leaders are accommodating new pressures and challenges.

Research in the area of politics, security and governance addresses issues of domestic and international political change, conflict, and cooperation. Research in this study area focuses on how rapid socio-economic development is affecting political institutions and processes and how political systems and leaders are accommodating new pressures and challenges.

 

Projects in this area include one by Sheila Smith , Shifting Terrain: The Domestic Politics of U.S. Military Presence in Asia Pacific which is intended to increase understanding of the relationship between the U.S. forward military presence and local political forces, in Japan, Korea and the Philippines. This research has involved key local personnel and U.S. diplomatic and military personnel in workshops and consultations. Workshops have been held in Okinawa, Japan and Seoul, Korea, and the final workshop was held in Bohol, Philippines in April. A Special Report on the project has been published.

 

Christopher McNally has organized two conferences on China’s Capitalist Transition in 2004 and 2005. The project aims to put forward a reinterpretation of China's massive socio-economic transformation and generate a realistic analysis of China’s economic rise. The second conference produced a series draft papers and an edited volume is being prepared.

 

The Asian International Justice Initiative builds upon four years of collabortation between the East-West Center and the War Crimes Studies Center at the University of California, Berkeley on projects related to human rights. A upcoming activity is the East Timor "Lessons Learned" Conference scheduled for May in Bangkok.
