Climate Change

Pacific RISA

Pacific RISA , the Pacific Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments Program, supports Pacific island and coastal communities in adapting to the impacts of climate variability and change. Pacific RISA strives to enhance Pacific communities’ abilities to understand, plan for, and respond to changing climate conditions. This work is conducted through interdisciplinary research and partnerships with local, national, and regional stakeholders. As one of 10 RISA programs sponsored by the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Pacific RISA emphasizes the engagement of communities, governments, and businesses in developing effective policies to build resilience in key sectors such as water-resource management, coastal and marine resources, fisheries, agriculture, tourism, disaster management, and public health.

Pacific Islands Regional Climate Assessment (PIRCA)

Pacific Islands Regional Climate Assessment (PIRCA)  is a collaborative effort to assess climate change indicators, impacts, and adaptive capacity of the Hawaiian archipelago and the US-Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI). PIRCA engages federal, state, and local government agencies, non-government organizations, academia, businesses, and community groups to inform and prioritize their activities in the face of a changing climate.

Cities at Risk

Cities at Risk

Beginning with an inaugural conference that took place in Bangkok in 2009, the East-West Center has been involved in a project to help planners and policymakers develop climate change adaptation and resilience policies at the municipal and regional level and mainstream these policies into the existing mechanisms of government. Research and training activities have been conducted in Thailand and Taiwan. More recently, Center specialists and collaborators have developed a five-day urban climate adaptation course that was tested and refined during 2015 in workshops held in Indonesia and the Philippines.
