The East-West Center community has been saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Lee-Jay Cho on October 31. During his 30 years at the Center, Dr. Cho served in a number of positions, including Director of the Population Institute, Vice-President for Academic Affairs, and Acting President. He retired in 2006 as Emeritus Scholar and most recently has served as Chairman of the Northeast Asia Economic Forum whose secretariat is based in Honolulu.
“The East-West Center has lost a former colleague, a constant friend, and an ardent supporter of its international mission,” said EWC President Richard R. Vuylsteke. “I had the opportunity to work as his assistant when he was the Center’s Acting President and saw firsthand his dedication to the Center and to its status as a source of immediately relevant research. He maintained his intellectual diligence and commitment to international collaboration long after retirement. May he rest in peace.”
In 2013, Dr. Cho was awarded Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun (Gold Rays with Rosette) for his contributions to the “enhancement of economic relations between Asian countries, including Japan and the US, and the promotion of research exchanges in the field of demography.”
Through the generosity of donors, the Center established the Lee-Jay Cho Endowed Chair in honor of his contributions to improving understanding and relations among countries of Asia and the Pacific.
