The Seven Year Itch of Prime Minister Abe: A shift from Abenomics to Constitution Amendment The Seven Year Itch of Prime Minister Abe: A shift from Abenomics to Constitution Amendment
In-person In-person

Shinzo Abe, who became Prime Minster in December 2012 for the second time, is now in his seventh year of leading Japan. He could soon hold the record of the longest-serving Prime Minister in Japan’s history. Prior to Abe becoming Prime Minister in 2012, Japan had six Prime Ministers lasting just one year each.

During the past 6+ years, PM Abe has carried out Abenomics, an economic policy package that consists of aggressive monetary policy, flexible fiscal policy and growth strategy. Before Abe became Prime Minister, Japan’s economy had been stagnant and deflationary for two decades. Professor Ito will review Prime Minister Abe’s long tenure and its economic impact on Japan as well as what the Prime Minister hopes to achieve in the 7th year of his leadership and beyond.

Takatoshi Ito, an internationally renowned expert on international finance, macroeconomics, and the Japanese economy, served as a member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy from 2006–2008. In addition to leading a distinguished academic and research career, he has served in senior positions in the Japanese government and at the International Monetary Fund. In 2011, the Japanese government awarded him the National Medal with Purple Ribbon for exceptional academic achievement. Professor Ito holds a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University.
