The EWC, supported by the US and Japanese governments, has helped strengthen research and educational exchange with Okinawa Prefecture. The Center prepared a report reviewing past initiatives to create a research center in Okinawa Prefecture focused on the Asia-Pacific region. The report suggested some lessons for those planning a new research center, as well as a possible research agenda for such a center. Subsequently, a comparative study of island development was undertaken.
