Program Description

The Advanced Leadership Program is an opportunity for advanced professionals to reflect upon personal and organizational achievement while developing plans for the future.  Taking place at the East-West Center's campus in Honolulu, Hawai'i, the program typically runs for approximately 6 weeks and consists of 8-12 participants from diverse backgrounds and sectors. Participants engage in a self-designed program with substantial time given to independent work, research and exploration. Participants receive their own workspace in an East-West Center office and have the option of attending East-West Center seminars, activities with the Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP) and the East-West Center's fall Wednesday Evening Seminar series.

Components of the ALP

  • Flexible schedule for professionals who cannot leave their positions for longer than a short sabbatical
  • No limitations on part-time consulting, research or partnerships or obligations outside of the East-West Center
  • Self-designed space for individual career development and research, in addition to exploration of subject areas which fit individualized academic curiosity
  • Opportunities for professional networking with research fellows and visiting scholars at the East-West Center and other local think tanks
  • Joint sessions with the APLP and other East-West Center program participants

Eligibility and Qualifications

The Advanced Leadership Program (ALP) is intended for individuals with at least 12 - 15 years of professional experience, and who would like to reflect upon, refocus and re-energize their professional and/or organizational development.  Examples of ideal participants may include: Managing directors who need to take time away from their day to day schedules for strategic planning and visioning; advanced professionals who are considering a career shift and who would benefit from the opportunity to explore new options within a structured framework; or leaders with regional responsibilities who might wish to deepen and/or widen their understanding of leadership and current trends in the Asia Pacific region.

  • At least 12 years of professional work experience and achievement
  • Leadership track record in professional, public and/or personal realms
  • Desire to engage in personal and professional reflection and strategic planning
  • International experience and aptitude, including overseas residence, language skills, and intercultural exposure
  • Asia Pacific region engagement:  Evidence of interest in and knowledge of the region, as well as a commitment to its future prosperity

How much does the program cost?
Fees to cover tuition, on-campus accommodations and administrative expenses for the eight week program are $3,500 USD.  Personal living and travel expenses vary according to the candidate's lifestyle.  We suggest that selected candidates budget at least $600 USD per month, or $1,200 USD for eight weeks, for food and other personal expenses.

Do I need to send academic transcripts of English language proficiency scores with my application?
No. The Advanced Leadership Program is intended for individuals with at least twelve (12) years of professional working experience.  Academic transcripts are not required in order to apply for this program.  Likewise, the TOEFL and IELTS are not required in order to apply for this program. English language proficiency will be determined by the Selection Committee during the interview stage.

What sort of visa is used for international participants attending the ALP?
Selected candidates who are not US citizens or permanent residents will be responsible for securing an entry visa appropriate for the Advanced Leadership Program.  We suggest that participants use a business visa for entry (B1), though other types of visas may be appropriate (this can be determined on a case-by-case basis).
