Spatial Information Laboratory Spatial Information Laboratory
The Spatial Information Laboratory at the East-West Center endeavors to develop and increase the use of remote sensing data, geographic information systems (GIS), and global positioning system (GPS) technology for mapping and assessing environmental conditions throughout Asia and the Pacific region, including Hawaii. Research projects include using satellite imagery for monitoring a wide variety of natural and anthropogenic environmental changes and integrating environmental and socioeconomic information into interdisciplinary analyses of regional policy issues.

Members of the Spatial Information Laboratory also help train East-West Center staff, students funded by or affiliated with the East-West Center, and scholars visiting the Center to enhance their research through the application of tools and techniques such as cartography, image processing, spatial analysis, and field surveying. Another important activity involves fostering collaborative research efforts among these groups and building local, regional, and national capacities for community-based resource management at international sites.
