The year 2010 marks the 50th anniversary of the East-West Center (EWC). This issue is a tribute to all the EWC visionaries, to those who laid the foundations and paths, and to those who traveled them. Many carried the mission to completion and even continued the journey beyond the given paths in multifarious ways of "building an Asia Pacific community." Thus, this year's Impulse Journal theme, "Recollections, Reflections, and Remembrance," was chosen to echo and celebrate the golden anniversary of the EWC and its fulfilled visions.

Impulse Journal is an independent magazine published by a group of East-West Center participants. Originally established in 1975 as an open forum interested in disseminating a wide variety of views within the East-West Center, the University of Hawaii, and the community at large, Impulse Journal currently focuses on publishing creative literary and artistic works inspired by an annual theme. The editors invited the submission of articles, creative writing, photographs, and artwork from all members of the East-West Center community. This special edition includes poetry, prose poetry, essays, short stories, photo essays, and artwork photographs.
