Regional Journalist Dialogues
These 3-day dialogues bring together journalists from neighbor countries to discuss important and often sensitive regional issues and how regional media coverage can be improved. Panels of journalists highlight the different perspectives and priorities of each country, the flashpoints that challenge regional relationships, and the difficult job media face in reporting these topics. The goal of the dialogue is to encourage frank, professional and respectful discussion on important regional issues in the hopes that this will enhance regional media coverage.

The events include expert speakers in addition to panels of journalists who focus on various news topics as well as historic and cultural issues that complicate regional relations.

The dialogues are co-sponsored by the East-West Center and diverse partners to respond to the needs of journalists in Asia Pacific regions by providing a platform for learning and exchange of ideas and diverse perspectives. The dialogues help build a dynamic network of professionals who share an interest in issues facing the region.

The East-West Center has offered these dialogues every two years since 2008.
  • Two Northeast Asia Journalist Dialogues, in 2008 and 2010, were held at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii for Japanese, Korean, Chinese and American journalists.
  • A South Asia Journalist Dialogue was held in June 2012 in Seoul following the East-West Center’s International Media Conference there. It was attended by journalists from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the United States.
  • The East-West Center is planning to hold another regional journalists dialogue March 13-14, 2014, following the East-West Center International Media Conference in Yangon, Myanmar.

Participation is by invitation. If you are interested please email kreifels@eastwestcenter.org
