2023 Asia Pacific Journalism Fellowships 2023 Asia Pacific Journalism Fellowships
Feb 12, 2023 - Feb 18, 2023

The 2023 Asia Pacific Journalism Fellowship (APJF), scheduled for February 12 – 18, 2023, will take six to seven print, broadcast, and online US journalists to Taiwan to enhance their understanding of contemporary Taiwan, as well as Taiwan-US relations and Asian issues through dialogue and field study. The program in Taiwan will include meetings with government, business, civic, cultural and religious leaders; scholars and students; NGOs; and local journalists and other community members to gain a better understanding of current political, economic, security, social and cultural issues in this country. Past programs have included high-level meetings with the President of Taiwan.

The program will cover each participant’s most economical round-trip airfare, lodging, program-related ground transportation, and meals during the study tour. Participating journalists are responsible for their own personal and incidental expenses.

Participation in the program is by invitation. The 2023 APJF is administered by the East-West Center in partnership with Ming Chuan University.

COVID-19 Safety & Mitigation Protocols

The East-West Center’s Asia Pacific Journalism Fellowship (APJF) team is working hard to ensure a safe environment and will be diligent in following all of the Taiwan Center for Disease Control’s guidelines for pandemic precautions.

Here are some specific safety policies we will have in place during the Fellowship:

  • All Center staff and participants must provide confirmation of full COVID-19 vaccination. A negative Covid-19 test result is insufficient. The Center follows CDC guidance/requirements for international travelers to Taiwan. Guidance to follow in terms of which vaccines, COVID testing, and documentation are required can be found at the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control, Travel.State.gov, and the American Institute in Taiwan.
  • Mask wearing during all indoor fellowship activities (workshops, trainings, transportation, etc.) is strongly recommended. Mask wearing outdoors is encouraged when social distancing is not possible. APJF has a limited supply of masks on hand for participants if needed, but also asks participants to bring their own supply as backup. N95, KN95 or KF94 masks are highly recommended.
  • Mask wearing, temperature checks, and COVID screenings may be required by study tour hosts before or during visits.
  • Where able, spaces will be arranged to allow for 3-6 feet of social distancing.
  • Where able, meals will be served outdoors or as single serve items and will abide by Taiwan's CDC guidelines.
  • Participants are required to agree to the: East-West Center COVID-19 Assumption of Risk, Liability Waiver, and Release Claims for Participation in EWC Activities and Events

If a participant tests positive for COVID-19 during the fellowship, they will be required to quarantine. It will be the responsibility of the participant to cover any additional expenses incurred and follow all COVID-19 protocols.
