Part of: Asia Pacific Journalism Fellowships

Program

The 2024 Asia Pacific Journalism Fellowship (APJF), scheduled June 16 – 26, 2024, will take six print, broadcast, and online US journalists to Taiwan to enhance their understanding of contemporary Taiwan, as well as Taiwan-US relations and Asian issues through dialogue and field study. The program in Taiwan will include meetings with government, business, civic, cultural, and religious leaders; scholars and students; NGOs; and local journalists to gain a better understanding of current political, economic, security, social and cultural issues in the country. Past programs have included high-level meetings with the President of Taiwan.

Following the study tour in Taiwan, the journalists will travel to Manila, Philippines to attend the East-West Center's 2024 International Media Conference and speak as panelists about their reporting tour and experiences gained in Taiwan. Held every two years in a major regional media hub, the International Media Conference offers a unique professional networking opportunity for journalists from the US, Asia, and Pacific to discuss key issues in the region and common challenges and trends in media through training workshops and networking events.

Funding

The program will cover each participant’s most economical round-trip airfare, lodging, program-related ground transportation, and select meals during the study tour. All participating journalists are responsible for paying a US$450.00 program fee and covering their own personal and incidental expenses including health insurance and airline baggage fees.

Participation in the program is by invitation only. The 2024 APJF is administered by the East-West Center in partnership with Ming Chuan University.

COVID-19 Safety & Mitigation Protocols

The East-West Center’s Asia Pacific Journalism Fellowship (APJF) team is working hard to ensure a safe environment and will be diligent in following all of the local, state and federal (CDC) guidelines in Taiwan and the Philippines.

Here are some specific safety policies we will have in place during the Fellowship:

  • The Center follows CDC guidance/requirements for international travelers to Taiwan and the Philippines. Guidance to follow in terms of which vaccines, COVID testing, and documentation are required can be found at the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control and Travel.State.gov for Taiwan and the Philippines. Please review and regularly check guidance that pertains to your specific circumstances up to the time of and during travel. Please keep abreast of guidelines for the location you are traveling from/to, any locales where you may need to transit, and any local requirements that may affect your return home.
  • All Center staff and participants must provide confirmation of full COVID-19 vaccination. This currently means two doses of the COVID-19 vaccination; a booster shot is highly recommended.
  • Mask wearing during all indoor fellowship activities (workshops, trainings, transportation, etc.) is strongly recommended. Mask wearing outdoors is encouraged when social distancing is not possible.
  • Mask wearing, temperature checks, and COVID screenings may be required by study tour hosts before or during visits.
  • Where able, spaces will be arranged to allow for 3-6 feet of social distancing.
  • Where able, meals will be served outdoors or as single serve items and will abide by local, state and federal guidelines.
  • Participants are required to agree to the: East-West Center COVID-19 Assumption of Risk, Liability Waiver, and Release Claims for Participation in EWC Activities and Events

If a participant tests positive for COVID-19 during the fellowship, program staff will inform the affected individual(s) as to the course of action to be taken in accordance with prevailing COVID-19 protocols. If a participant tests positive for COVID-19, they will be required to quarantine. It will also be their responsibility to cover any additional expenses incurred and follow all COVID-19 protocols.
