Cross-Border Journalism Student & Faculty Exchange Cross-Border Journalism Student & Faculty Exchange
Jan 01, 2018 - May 31, 2019

Part of: Cross-Border Journalism Initiatives

Program

The second phase of the East-West Center's cross-border journalism programming started in January 2018 and focused on two groups: media gatekeepers and the next generation of journalists. More than 100 Indian and Pakistani journalism students participated in virtual exchanges over three semesters from January 2018 through May 2019. Together, these master's students collaborated to produce more than 22 cross-border stories, which may be read online at Ittehad: Building Bridges Across South Asia.

Faculty members in both countries worked together to develop curricula that focused on cross-border media collaboration. Class activities included virtual dialogues and binational reporting projects on topics of mutual interest. The students' projects were incorporated into their overall grade for the semester.

Further Impacts

  • Six Indian and Pakistani faculty members met for a dialogue in Colombo in December 2018
  • In June 2019, six students from the two countries met in Kathmandu in June 2019, where they discussed their experiences with several working journalist alumni of the Center's previous cross-border programs.
