The Arizona Chapter of the East-West Center Alumni Association is very proud to report that our Chapter alumni contributed $1150 to the Endowment Fund in response to our September appeal.
Congratulations and a big welcome to Tomi Johnston who now serves as the Chapter Leader of Arizona after the resignation of Michelle Marion as Chapter Leader on September 2, 2011. Michelle Marion will continue her service to a) the EWCA Board and b) the EWCA Student Scholarship Endowment Fund.
The Chapter is currently working on its Facebook page to keep the EWC Alumni in Arizona informed and is engaged in distributing EWC Alumni Scholarship Endowment letters. The Chapter hopes to get positive results on the project.
No new activities to report for this quarter. Michelle Marion representing the Arizona Chapter and a member alumnus of the ASDP Chapter is also working with the EWC Endowment Fund Group. She will be sharing the goals of the latter group with the Arizona chapter and via the list serve and quarterly newsletter, to the ASDP chapter.
On the response to the 2 proposals: both the Arizona chapter and ASDP will be discussing the fundraising endowment issue with Michelle and supports the 2x per year chapter reporting as it provides more time for EWCA related activities among academics busy with job and classroom concerns.
On October 16, 2010, at the conclusion of the Silk Road Tour coordinated by EWC alumnus Tim Wong, a check for $5,000 was sent to Gordon Ring, courtesy of the China Discovery Tours who donated $200 for each full participant on the tour. In addition, Tsue Ostemann, wrote an article about the tour experience, which may be viewed here.
Dr. Tim Wong led a 20 day trip to China along the Silk Road including stays in Beijing and Shanghai. Twenty-eight people participated in the program and a small portion of the program fee was designated for EWC student scholarships.
EWCA-ASDP alumni Tomi Johnson and Michele Marion were volunteer gardeners for the fall season garden clean up in preparation for the Harvest Moon Festival, Ro Ho En Japanese Friendship Garden in Phoenix, Arizona.
The Arizona chapter will establish a Facebook page and other social networking venues for chapter news, updates, etc…
