- To support the mission of the East-West Center
- To increase active membership in the Chapter
- To support the Center through networking and fundraising activities
The EWCA-HI has aimed to achieve its goals through various activities:
- Hosting an Annual Membership Meeting and Social is held usually each Fall, where the chapter's Outstanding Service Award, with a monetary gift, is presented to an EWCA-HI alumnus who has served the Center and the Association above and beyond. In 1999, this event was held at the Hawaiian Regent Hotel, the venue of the up-coming EWC/EWCA 2000 International Conference, July 4-8, 2000.
- Creating the Professional Linkage Program (ProLink), which provides EWC participants, an opportunity to "shadow" relevant Center alumni in order to get first-hand experience of the everyday work environment and work culture. Each semester the ProLink Committee, made up of both alumni and participants, host a social for alumni and participants to meet "their match."
- Hosting current EWC participants on various socials and field trips to encourage alumni and participants to interact; cultivate current participants (future alumni); and offer the participants a chance to see more of Hawaii than the University campus. Past excursions have included a tour of Waimea Valley, a drum Pacific Drum Festival, and sponsorship to attend the annual meeting/social.
Each year at its Annual Meeting, the EWCA Hawaii Chapter presents the Outstanding Service Award to an EWC Associate who has provided outstanding service to the East-West Center, the East-West Center Association, and/or to the local community.

The Chapter holds regular monthly meetings at the EWC. On the Alumni Endowment Student Fundraising, Hawaii EWC alumni have responded positively to the goal. The following events are sponsored by the Chapter: 1) On August 20, 2011 over 170 incoming students and alumni will hold the annual picnic at Kapiolani Park. Chapter alumni along with members of the EWCPA will sponsor food preparation. This event has been an excellent venue for networking with past and future alumni of the EWC. 2) The EWC Birthday celebration was held at the Honolulu Elks Club and was hosted by EWC Hawaii Board Member Sue Heftel-Liquido. At the event, Alumni Officer Gordon Ring was honored for his 31 years of service to the EWC. 3) The Chapter made a donation to the Red Cross for the victims of the disaster in Japan 4) The Chapter will be hosting an August sale of donated kitchen items at the EWC. Incoming students appreciate the inexpensive opportunity to secure kitchen/dining supplies at low prices. 5) Lastly, the chapter is continuing ProLink (Professional Linkage Program) of an EWC participant “shadowing” an alumnus to get 1st hand experience of his/her work culture. Each semester the PL committee hosts a contact social so participating matches can interact.
The Chapter is happy to report the following sponsored events for this quarter. First, over 140 EWC alumni and students attended the Hawaii Chapter Annual Fundraising Event held at the Pacific Club on April 3, 2011. The central goal of the event, raising funds for EWC student travel awards, was successful, and five EWC student travels to professional conferences this summer will be realized. There were other social/networking goals achieved at this event: The event opened with a period of respectful silence for the earthquake and tsunami victims of Japan. Highlighted were meaningful speeches by EWC Pres. Morrison, EWC Board of Governors Chair Sananikone, and Executive Board Members Flanigan and Hefner. The dinner was enhanced by a spirited auction and art bazaar of Asian artifacts and collectibles. Second, the Chapter hosted an intimate cultural evening of Japanese music and food by visiting musicians from Japan who superbly performed Kouta, a Japanesse musical art form.
Third, the Chapter is planning to host an event in May 2011 to celebrate the annual birthday of the EWC.
The Hawaii Chapter reported their partial list of activities:1) members meet regularly at the EWC on a monthly basis. 2) ProLink, the Chapter’s Professional Linkage Program, is ongoing. Each semester, the Program’s Committee of alumni and participants hosts a social event, so both groups can meet “their match”. By shadowing the alumnus, a participant experiences firsthand, the work environment and culture of the alumnus. 3) Last December, the Chapter’s fundraising project at the EWC Christmas Fair, coordinated by Itsuko Suzuki, was as in the past, a success. 4) The annual fundraising dinner at the Pacific Club is currently planned. The Chapter is thankful for the tremendous community support for this yearly project, thereby funding travel scholarships for 4-5 EWC students. Likewise, at this event, the Chapter will give an award to the EWCA-HI alumnus who has served the Center and the Association above and beyond the call of volunteerism duty. Finally, reported at the previous meeting, the Chapter reiterated the August annual “networking” picnic event at Kapiolani Park attended by over 175 incoming EWC students and alumni.
The Hawaii Chapter welcomed incoming EWC students at its annual EWC Student Orientation Picnic at Kapiolani Park on August 21,2010. Chapter members prepared food for over 200 students, EWC alumni and guests. Alumnus Alapaki Luke delivered a short talk on the history and culture of Hawaii with emphasis on the history of Queen Kapiolani and Kapiolani park. Participants had a great time networking, socializing and interacting with students from different countries.
Alumnus Itsuku Suzuki organized an August event that enabled incoming students to acquire needed household goods for their stay at Hale Manoa and Hale Kuahine. This activity has now become an annual Hawaii Chapter contribution towards making incoming EWC students adapt readily to their new living quarters.
A networking “Pizza Lunch” organized and participated in by Alumni Carl Hefner and Ric Trimillos was held on August 11th. Incoming EWC students met with EWC alumni in focus groups for the purpose of discussing the students future academic and career plans. Because of the focus groups’ huge success, there are plans to continue the event in 2011.
