The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Indian Elections: A Psephologist’s Perspective

featuring
Yashwant Deshmukh, Founder & Director, Centre for Voting Opinion & Trends in Election Research (CVoter)

India is coming up for elections this year. With over 980 million people registered to vote and the voter turnout expected to be high, it will be the largest election in the history of electoral democracy. Going by the narratives of the popular media both within India and abroad, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by the incumbent Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi looks all set to rule for a third consecutive term; while the opposition led by the Congress (I) seems to be in disarray. However, what are the granular realities of this election beyond these dominant narratives? Is the BJP as overwhelmingly dominant as the popular media portrays? Is the opposition as ineffectual as they are made out to be? Are there parts of the country where the opposition is strong?  If so, how significant will these pockets?  In answering these questions, we will gain an informed perspective of the Indian democracy. And to help us think through these questions, we will be joined by Mr. Yashwant Deshmukh, the founder-director of Centre for Voting Opinion & Trends in Election Research (CVoter), one of the leading international Public Opinion and Stakeholder research agencies. Even as we speak, Mr. Deshmukh is coordinating multiple national and sub-national surveys to understand the ‘mood of the nation.’

Yashwant Deshmukh is a senior journalist and psephologist with more than 25 years of experience in covering India’s elections. He has shared his analysis and perspectives on all the leading national news channels in India, including Aaj Tak, ABP, Times Now, India Today, BBC, CNN18, and numerous sub-national ones. He is an accomplished speaker and has conducted numerous research workshops which are attended by students from national and international universities.
