Tough Decisions on the Korean Peninsula: Relations between North & South, US-ROK, and Neighbors

Due to the impacts and uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic, and our concerns for the safety of our participants and communities, the Korea Press Foundation (KPF) and the East-West Center (EWC) agreed to cancel the travel for the 2020 Korea-United States Journalists Exchange and instead, hosted two remote seminars – one for the American participants to meet with Korean experts and one for the Korean participants to meet with American experts.

The remote seminars focused on US-ROK alliance and North Korea. The American journalists met with distinguished Korean experts, Dr. MOON Chung-In, Special Adviser to President Moon Jae-in for Foreign Affairs and National Security; and Dr. KIM Joon Hyung, Chancellor of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy. They learned about President Moon’s actions and policies on inter-Korean relations; US-ROK relations; and other current issues.

The Korean journalists met with two distinguished US experts, Mr. Keith Luse, Executive Director of the National Committee on North Korea; and Mr. Harry Kazianis, Senior Director of Korean Studies at the Center for the National Interest. They explored conflicts between North Korea and the United States; the recent North Korea’s destruction of the joint liaison office with South Korea; US-ROK relations; regional neighbors; and other current issues. All of these issues were discussed in light of the Covid pandemic’s impact on both domestic and international relations and economies.

These seminars were co-sponsored and co-organized by the East West Center and the Korea Press Foundation.
