Gallery Exhibition: Reflections in Water, 2023 Hawaiʻi Watercolor Society Open Show Gallery Exhibition: Reflections in Water, 2023 Hawaiʻi Watercolor Society Open Show

Reflections in Water features 40 paintings by 32 artists, selected by juror Joseph Zbukvic. The paintings in this exhibition were guided by the theme of Global Connection. Over the span of the Covid era, artists around the world simultaneously found themselves isolated and embraced by a wider community of fellow creatives. While many of us struggled to find ways of working constricted spaces, the new limits birthed creativity and newfound resilience. Enabled by Zoom and other platforms, we reached across borders and found new friends, worked in new mediums, and collaborated in ways we'd never dreamed of. We invited artists to submit work inspired by their experiences during the Covid era and reflect on these new territories and explorations.

Juror Joseph Zbukvic is a contemporary realist watercolor painter and a leading master of watercolor medium. Primarily depicting representational landscapes in muted tones, he focuses heavily on historic sites and atmospheric depth. Zbukvic was born in Croatia and now lives and works in Melbourne, Australia.

The Hawaiʻi Watercolor Society was founded in 1962 by noted Hawaiʻi artist Hon Chew Hee. Hee was born in Kahului, Maui in 1906 but was raised in China, where he learned Chinese brush painting. After studying at the San Francisco Art Institute, Hee returned to Hawaiʻi in 1935 where he worked as an artist and teacher. Over the course of his career, he exhibited his paintings nationally and internationally including at the Library of Congress in Washington DC the National Academy of Design in New York, and the Galerie Ariel in Paris.

Today the Hawaiʻi Watercolor Society aims to nurture and stimulate interest in water media through education, exhibition, and collaboration with other organizations, associations, and individuals, sponsoring two juried exhibits every year. This is the first time the Hawaiʻi Watercolor Society has presented an exhibition at the East-West Center.
