The Chinese social media app TikTok currently has 150 million US users, and hosts nearly five million American businesses. For economic and security reasons, however, the US government is considering policies to ban the app. This talk assesses the controversy and considers the path for TikTok in the US going forward.

Eric Harwit researches and teaches about the politics of China’s industrial development. His books include China’s Automobile Industry, China’s Telecommunications Revolution, and the co-edited book China’s Globalizing Internet. His recent publications focus on the politics and economic development of China’s 5G mobile network deployment, mobile social media, and electric vehicle industry. He received his PhD in political science from the University of California, Berkeley.
