A New Avenue for ROK-US Climate Change Cooperation: Under the Indo-Pacific Strategy, toward the Pacific Islands

featuring
Ms. Kyoung Hae Kim, Career diplomat of the Republic of Korea since 2008. With expertise in environmental diplomacy and multilateral economic affairs, she has served at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea in Colombia.

Abstract: In 2022, the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the United States released their Indo-Pacific strategies and positioned it at the center of their foreign policies. While existing analyses of this topic focus on shifting power dynamics in the Indo-Pacific and its consequences for the US-China rivalry, less attention has been given to implications for global challenges such as climate change. This talk explores possibilities that the ROK and the US can bolster climate change cooperation surrounding the Pacific Islands region in the framework of their Indo-Pacific strategies by examining relevant policy papers and summit talk outcome documents. Policy recommendations concerning possible pathways and potential areas for future collaboration is also provided.

Ms. Kyoung Hae Kim is a career diplomat of the Republic of Korea, having served since 2008. With expertise in environmental diplomacy and multilateral economic affairs, she has served at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations in Geneva and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Columbia.
