Mapping Transformations in Vietnam's Cities: Changes in Urban Built-up Density and Socialist Collective Housing in Hanoi

featuring
Duong Nong, Lecturer, Faculty of Natural Resources and Environment, Vietnam National University of Agriculture

In less than 30 years, Vietnam has transformed from one of the poorest nations in the world to the third-fastest-growing economy in Asia, and currently is the fourth fastest growing economy in the world. The rapid population growth and expansion of built-up areas in Hanoi capital city have placed a significant strain on existing urban infrastructures, including housing, road system, schools, and municipal sewage system. This has resulted in various environmental and social issues such as traffic congestion, diminishing green spaces and water bodies, frequent instances of inundation, and an increased prevalence of infectious diseases. In this presentation, Duong Nong will discuss the outcomes of mapping changes in urban built-up density within the central districts of Hanoi, spanning from 1990 to the present, using remote sensing data and population census information. It is followed by a case study of socialist collective housing model in Hanoi, which emerged in the 1950s, its transformation over time and future prospects.

Duong Nong holds a position as a lecturer at the Faculty of Natural Resources and Environment in Vietnam National University of Agriculture. He is also an alumnus of the East-West Center. In 2010, he was awarded a scholarship from the National Science Foundation under the project “Coupled Natural-Human Systems and Emerging Infectious Diseases”. This allowed him to participate in the East-West Center research program and pursue his Ph.D. in Natural Resources and Environmental Management at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, which he successfully completed in 2015. Dr. Duong Nong’s current research primarily focuses on land cover, land use change analysis and urban transformation within Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries.
