A New Look at the Crude Oil Shocks and Korea’s Bilateral Trade

featuring
Dr. Jungho Baek, Harold T. Caven Professor of Economics in the College of Business and Security Management (CBSM) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks

Korea is highly dependent on imported crude oil, which accounts for half of domestic energy usage. Furthermore, Korea's trade with China, the United States, and Japan collectively make up around 45 percent of its total trade volume. Consequently, it is of great policy importance to delve into how fluctuations in oil prices have affected the flow of trade between South Korea and these top three trade partners. This research takes an empirical approach to investigate the impact of oil shocks on Korea's trade with these three countries, employing innovative econometric methodologies. The empirical insights generated by this study hold significant ramifications for enhancing trade models and facilitating analyses of trade policies.

Dr. Jungho Baek is Harold T. Caven Professor of Economics in the College of Business and Security Management (CBSM) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. His main areas of research include international trade, economics of energy and trade, resource economics, economics of environment and trade, and econometric modeling. He has written 118 articles in these specialized fields published in international peer-reviewed journals. He is Editor-in-Chief for Commodities, sits on the editorial board for Sustainability, and serves as an associate editor of Forest Science.
