The Promise of Commons: Community-Led Governance of the Commons

featuring
Pratiti Priyadarshini, Head, Learning, Measurement, and Evaluation, Foundation for Ecological Security

2.5 billion people around the world depend on forests, pastures and water bodies – collectively, the Commons, for their livelihoods. In the context of India, Commons constitute nearly a quarter of India’s landmass, meet the critical subsistence and livelihood needs of more than 350 million rural poor, and hold social and cultural significance for these rural communities. Despite their significance, commons are usually neglected in the development and conservation agenda.

The Promise of Commons is a collaborative initiative of government institutions, community institutions, NGOs, academia think tanks, research institutions, media, and the private sector to address the interconnected issues of environmental health, social justice, and economic wellbeing in rural India. The initiative focuses on catalyzing informed and collaborative action among state, market, and community institutions, creating the necessary infrastructure in terms of data, tools and technology, and building a pool cadre who enable communities to drive change.

In this presentation, Pratiti Priyadarshini will share about the ongoing efforts under the Promise of Commons initiative that provides a range of opportunities for international exchange of experience on research, practice, and policy. The presentation will be followed by discussion on potential areas of collaboration for research, communications and capacity strengthening to realize the promise of Commons for nature and people.

Pratiti Priyadarshini leads the Learning, Measurement and Evaluation team at Foundation for Ecological Security (https://fes.org.in/). She has more than a decade of experience in working on the intersection of research-practice-policy to advance informed and collaborative action around natural resources. Her work has focused on long term socio-ecological monitoring, building evidence of the significance of Commons, and developing and applying experiential learning methods and tools that can help strengthen collective action on governance of shared natural resources.
