2022 has gone by in a flash, and the East-West Center in Washington actively worked to put on stellar programs with the resumption of in-person events this year. To make sure you didn't miss anything, we've put together this 2022 Year in Review for our projects & programs. Asia Matters for America:

2022 Year in Review

In 2022, the East-West Center in Washington launched a record-breaking 5 new Asia Matters for America/America Matters for Asia (AMA) publications, with 3 publications covering completely new countries:

as well as a a brand-new Asia Matters Poll Report and a new, updated edition of the titular Asia Matters for America. All Asia Matters for America publications are available on the AsiaMattersForAmerica.org website, along with interactive data visualizations.

Asia Pacific Bulletin & Publications:

2022 Year in Review

This year, we released 44 total Asia Pacific Bulletin (APB) policy briefs, in addition to 4 special publication series. These series included:

In June, we released our aforementioned Asia Matters for America: Public & Elite Opinion Poll Report, which compared US public and elite opinions of America's interactions with the Indo-Pacific region at the state and local levels. Questions addressed issues pertaining to economy, security, politics, people-to-people connections, as well as to what extent Americans believe Asia matters for the United States.

In September, we released New Opportunities for the United States-Kingdom of Thailand Alliance in the Indo-Pacific in collaboration with the Royal Thai Embassy DC. This report is a summary of a two-day seminar in which experts from Thailand and the US hailing from government, military, academic, think tank, and private sector backgrounds discussed issues and opportunities for the US-Thai alliance.

With 3 cohorts in 2022, we welcomed 26 Young Professionals representing 8 nationalities. These Young Professionals wrote the vast majority of the 110+ articles published to the AsiaMattersForAmerica.org website this year, providing crucial analysis and updates on US-Asia local connections.

After the pandemic paused our Visiting Fellow programs for two years, we were excited to welcome our first three visiting fellows to the DC office. From our Asia Studies Visiting Fellowship we welcomed Dr. Lami Kim (USA) and Dr. Nasir Uddin (Bangladesh), and from our US-Philippines Alliance Fellowship we welcomed Renato Acosta (Philippines).

In total, the East-West Center in Washington held 29 public events this year. Of these events, 20 were virtual and 9 were in-person—including our first in-person program in over 2 years! We also held 2 launch events on Capitol Hill for the release of our Pacific Islands Matter for America and Taiwan Matters for America publications.

This year, EWCW held season 2 of our North Korea in the World webinar series with the National Committee on North Korea. Together, we jointly hosted 6 webinars focusing on North Korea's relations with Europe.

In 2022, the East-West Center in Washington held 2 Congressional Staff Programs with a total of 25 Congressional Staffers participating in 15 educational lunch seminars on US-Indo-Pacific relations on Capitol Hill. The programs included the newly-launched Congressional Staff Program on the Pacific held from April-May, and the Congressional Program on US-Japan Relations and the Indo-Pacific, which was held in partnership with Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA from February-March.

In September, East-West Center President Suzanne Vares-Lum moderated and VP Satu Limaye attended the U.S.-Pacific Island Country Summit lunch and discussion hosted by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken at the Department of State. This event also marked the release of the official US Pacific Partnership Strategy, which mentioned the East-West Center by name on page 15. Read the strategy.

In September, First Lady of Hawai'i Dawn Amano-Ige visited the EWC Washington office. EWCW welcomed a number of visitors from Hawai'i this year, including program participants from the Honolulu EWC office for journalism exchanges and professional fellows visiting Washington, DC.

US Indo-Pacific Statecraft Matters for South and Southeast Asia (UMSS) was an extra-curricular, leadership and educational program funded by the US Consulate in Kolkata. Roughly 10-20 graduate students from each of the participating universities in India, Indonesia, Nepal, and the United States participated in two diplomacy summits which included mock diplomatic exercises. The EWC in Washington created an online virtual training toolkit and curriculum for this program.
