US Indo-Pacific Policy Matters (USIPM) is an educational initiative of the East-West Center in Washington (EWCW). Established by the US Congress in 1960, the East-West Center is an independent, public, nonprofit organization with funding from the US government and additional support from private agencies, individuals, foundations, corporations, and partner governments. The USIPM curriculum leverages the full breadth of EWC resources, including publications, seminars, insights from policymakers, and commentary from regional experts, to enhance student understanding of US policy in the Indo-Pacific region. In addition to introducing students to the tenets of US policy, the USIPM curriculum seeks to provide an overview of how policy is formulated, debated, and executed.

US Indo-Pacific Policy Matters (USIPM) is a set of course modules designed to introduce undergraduate students to various facets of US Indo-Pacific policy. You can view the curriculum on the Asia Matters website. The USIPM curriculum focuses on US policy towards the region stretching from India to Japan. The curriculum highlights key US priorities, themes, approaches, and historical milestones. It uses primary source material from the US government, including legislation, speeches from officials, and strategy documents, as well as multimedia materials, such as congressional hearings, panel discussions, and EWCW’s interactive Asia Matters for America website.

The curriculum will include at least 12 modules focusing on different aspects of US Indo-Pacific policy, covering a range of topics including the history of Indo-Pacific policy, regional institutions, security issues, and economic initiatives. The modules can be individually incorporated into a wide range of courses, from political science to economics. Instructors can also elect to use the modules in concert to create a full course that offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary introduction to US policy in the Indo-Pacific region. Each module includes learning objectives, reading materials, class activities, and multimedia resources. EWCW will also endeavor to support the USIPM curriculum by organizing virtual seminars related to module topics. These seminars will allow students to engage with experts and receive timely updates on US policy as it evolves.

EWCW created the USIPM curriculum to help educational institutions supplement their Asian Studies programs. The program seeks to partially mitigate the resource constraints educational institutions face when developing course offerings on the Indo-Pacific. By leveraging East-West Center scholarship and our network of experts, educational institutions will be better positioned to support students interested in US foreign policy as it relates to the Indo-Pacific. As an organization partially funded through tax dollars, the East-West Center views this initiative as an opportunity to serve the public good.
